DIVISION 1 GAMES

InterQuartile Rangers are in the relegation zone, and we are getting closer and closer to being halfway season, so time to do something about that. Their homegame against Excelsior Warren could be an opportunity. Excelsior Warren is one of those teams in the very, very large midtable this season. The differences between the teams in div 1 look very small this season, and you can see that reflected in the league table. With 10 point, as I already mentioned, EW is one of those midtable teams. A defeat could bring them in the relegation zone, while a victory could bring them to the 5th spot, with good perspectives on a top 3 position. I guess the midtable fight hasn’t been this exciting for a long time! Both Terry and Simon preferred an attacking tactics: Terry played ONE while Simon played LB. IQ had more NSL on the pitch, but it wasn’t that much more, and if CB Modyford would not have been sent off, the difference in EMP would not have been much either. But now it was, because playing with 10 for over 75 minutes, cost EW a lot of EMP. That was too much to cope with, and as a result of that, IQ wins 15-8. Depending on the results of other teams, IQ has a chance of escaping the relegation zone on goal difference this week, with this result. However, even if they don’t the difference between them and the bottom of that midtable is so small, that nothing has been decided yet, and IQ has every opportunity to stay in.

Speaking of fighting relegation: two of the teams that already look like having to be careful not to get in too much trouble, are NoShaKi WC’98 and Apocalypse. They are on positions 9 and 12 now, NW on the very bottom of the table, while AP are just above the danger line, 2 points ahead of LU and 3 points ahead of IQ. But we already saw IQ win, so the situation isn’t getting any easier. Unless AP win themselves, of course. In order to get a good result in this match, that could be called a six-pointer, Martin thought it would be a good idea to play a grudge. That turned out to be a good thought. Both teams played WP, so very attacking. The difference wasn’t big, but with this grudge, that difference was in AP’s favour. That was reflected not only in chances, but also in goals, and so the 3 points were for Martin and AP. It looks like Mike is saving his grudges for the cup, and knowing him as the cup fighter he is, that is no surprise, but if he wants to stay in div 1, he better win matches like this, as a home match against another team near the relegation line means 3 important points to win. And that could be worth playing a grudge as well. Although, of course, it’s all a matter of priorities.

Alcohol Anonymous against The Boelewieten is a clash between the numbers 2 and 4 on the table. After a couple of good results in the last couple of weeks, TB have been climbing and climbing, and now they’re only 2 places behind AA. The difference between them however is still 5 points. Which means that a win for AA would make the gap big again, while a win for TB would give them the opportunity to catch AA soon. Sounds like this match could be considered important. However, neither Nathan nor Jeroen wanted to spend a grudge or boost on it. They did play their strongest teams though (I think), and that turned out to be pretty strong too. It might have been because of the red card for Altercapio, but Jeroen had the best of it. He had the better EMP, and the better chances: 34 against 29. The difference in GK NSL was very small: 9.75 for AA, against 9.5 for TB. Very small indeed, but it was big enough to create a rather unexpected big difference! AA’s Collis saved a lot of shots, while TB’s Adams, well….how do you put it nicely…..had better days. (In fact, he was lousy!) After Jeroen was very lucky last week, stealing a point against CA while CA was much better, this week it’s the other way around for him, so looking over 2 matches, he cannot complain too much. Although I know he will. Nathan has reduced the top four to a top three again, with this win. Will the gap be big enough now, to last until the end of the league?

This week, we have another dutch clash (well, with so many dutch teams in div 1, that’s no surpise of course), when Catbel Athletic and Tottenford Heats meet. It’s not just one of those clashes in the best dutch manager cup, it’s also a clash between the reigning champion, and the current leader in div. 1. Ivo did not want to take any chances, and played a strong team. However, he could have known better, as next week is a cup week, and we all know what Mark does in a week before a cup game, when he’s not going for the league: he rests his best players! And of course, why change a winning tactics, is what Mark must have thought, cause look what he does this week? He rests his players! The red card for AS Shipena will have more impact on next weeks match (he won’t be able to play then), because for this weeks game, CA was much stronger, more than 18 EMP. That resulted in 9 chances for CA, against none for TH. When CA managed to kick in 7 out of those 9 (which is a good scoring percentage), it was enough for a well deserved win. CA stay in the lead of div 1, with AA only 1 point behind them.

Jazz Greats against Oaklake City means the numbers 5 and 6 of the table playing against each other. We have already seen AP win their match, so at least one of these teams will drop to the bottom half of the table. Bart played his usual WP, and the BC from Keith was also no surprise. The differences between them weren’t that big. We saw +1 NSL in JG’s favour, and 3.29 EMP in JG’s favour. With 2 teams playing ZD, this might have resulted in a 0-0, but since both teams played quite offensive, JG were given 7 chances, against 5 for OC. Well, both GK’s saved 3 shots, and that meant a 4-2 victory for JG. JG climb 1 position, and are 5th now, 1 point behind TB. OC drop to the bottom half, but they don’t have to get worried yet.

FC Inferno have lost a few points lately, what caused them to be a little behind CA and AA, although they are still in 3rd position. However, we already saw AA and CA win this week, so if Marco doesn’t want the gap to be too big, he knows what he has to do this week: beat LU. Knowing Lisbon United, you’d think that is a tough job, as LU is always a strong team. However, this season it’s different. In fact, LU is in the danger zone, at 10th position, and we already have seen IQ win their game, so if LU don’t want to drop another place, they have to beat FI. However, either Nuno did not have the power to trouble FI, or he thought it might be better to rest some players and try to win points in less difficult matches than an away game against FI. Which is a thought that would make perfectly good sense of course. The difference wasn’t even that big, so don’t think that LU was crushed by FI, but it was enough for FI to win without too many complications, and I guess everyone has to admit that this result is fair. FI keep the gap between them and CA&AA intact, while LU drops to the 11th position.
