DIVISION 2 GAMES

The first match in division 2 this season, is between Melchester Rovers and Dead Scientists, the numbers 11 and 12 of last season, and therefore candidates for relegation now we have a third division. So, for both Bruce and Tim it would be important to win this match, as 3 points might be a huge first step towards trying to avoid relegation. Both MR and DS turned out to be able to field a pretty nice team, both playing with a freak player and some NSL 9+ players. However, it was Tim whose team was just a little better, partly because he managed to chose the best tactics for his players. DS’ Winghalfplay was a lot better than the LongBall played by MR (Bruce, with these quality players on these positions, you should try to play BC or CP for a change, it might give you more EMP), resulting in a 4-1 victory for DS.

I think it’s safe to say MR didn’t have a good season last year. So it’s interesting to see how they start this new season. Well, not bad. It seems they have a freak in MF Bryce and they seem to have two good S’r. But why on earth would they play LB with only two decent striker and one lousy CF? In the end MR looks like a team with quality but in dire need of a bit of trading. And a better captain than Bryce… DS is one of those teams that show real quality once in a while and this is once in a while :) CB Foxe is looking good as a freak and 92 nsl is not bad. At least enough to beat MR with a solid 1-4 victory. Still, DS’s WH tactic looks good but with 2 AM’s and 2 S’r there is still a lot of room for improvement. So DS looks ready for some trading as well. Conclusion. MR and DS are looking ok but there is loads of room for improvements with a little effort from there managers..

The match between Druss Legends and Adirondak Renegades was the game between 2 teams that just missed out on prizes last season. Don was only beaten by an inch by Peter from ES when it came down to the last playoff spot, and Martijn was unlucky to miss promotion, after leading the table for almost half of the season. Both teams appear to have lost no strength at all, in fact I guess that they have become even better than they were last year. However, last year the difference between DL and AR was obvious, and that is something that hasn’t changed yet. The 131.39 by DL is impressive, and better than a lot of Div 1 teams this week, while AR’s 123.01 EMP this week is promising too. In fact, with this match Martijn already presents himself once again as a title candidate, while Don must be confident about reaching those playoffs. Let’s face it, the away game against DL promises to be one of the toughest matches this season, so things can only get better!

This match is interesting. Martijn’s DL just missed promotion as Don’s AR just missed the playoffs. Both managers will intend to reach those goals in season 11! DL looks very very good with a nice 131 emp WP-team. If you ask me, this is title form but we haven’t seen how they rotate yet. Nevertheless, Martijn shows the compition where he stands! Don is building and building and gets fair results in the meanwhile as well. His team for this season looks solid. Not the nsl and emp DL put on the table but a 92 nsl and 123 emp is nothing to be ashamed of! It does mean they get beaten quite badly but i don’t think Don will really be dissappointed. Because as DL shows title form so AR shows playoff form. Real playoff form…

Speaking of missing promotion: the way Point of Napier missed the promotion to div 1 was even more dramatic than in DL’s case! But a new season brings new changes, so let’s see what Kelly is capable of this season. This weeks match was against the African Selects, the first team that relegated from div 1 we can witness in action. And of course, just as much as Kelly wants to win promotion, Colin wants to head back to div 1 too. He must have expected PN to play WP (because they always do), and countered that with a very defensive TC, hoping that would be enough. Well, it was enough to avoid PN to score, but it was not enough to win the match. In fact, Colin can be lucky that his GK Kariba managed to save the single chance that was created in this match. No winners in this game, and 1 point each. Although when it comes to promotion, they both might have lost 2 points.

A goalless draw. Yawn!! Well, not really. Because this is an interesting match. “Bad luck” Kelly, who just missed promotion, against ex-Div1 team AS. PN showed nice form in their WP team with two freak in the attack and allmost 123 emp in an away match. Still she will be disappointed because a defensive AS kept her team at 0-0. so a loss in points where DL got all three. Not a great start. AS looks solid in defense to stop the WP of PN. But how is their own attack…. Colin will have to show us next week!

England Under 21 played the first match of the season at home, against Newton Heath, and it turns out that EU has quite a competing team this season. Mike was able to play with no less than 100.25 NSL (including no less than 2 freaks), and in spite of the 95 NSL that Robert was able to put on the field (which is quite high as well of course), it was enough to beat NH: 9-6. EU was unlucky to see their team reduced to 10 within the hour because of the red card for J.Morales, but it didn’t bother them: their victory was safe. This win does not just mean 3 points for EU, but looking at the way he wins the game, he might be a better candidate for the playoffs than he was last season. And even then, EU stayed in the race very very long.

EU is a very interesting team to watch as well. They have been building a good squad in the last seasons and it shows from this match. Despite the sentoff for Morales they reached an emp of 125. Without sentoff their emp would have rivalled DL’s emp! That’s not even all. They field an astonishing 100.25 nsl on the pitch. So, a good victory for title candidates EU.Let’s see where they end! NH is a team that was struggling last season but looking at this match they are getting up! They reached decent emp in an away match and they didn’t even field the perfect players for a WH team because they fielded only 1 AM. The S’rs and extra WH do get bonus but a lot less. So NH is in my opinion a candidate for the playoffs but with one or two trades maybe they could go even further..

Stannington Historical is the second team we see this week, that relegated from div 1. Their opening match this season is at home against The Jazz, and that proved to be a difficult one. Too difficult, in fact, for Len. Both Len and Stewart played CP, so no outsmarting tactics: this game would be won by the best team. And that turned out to be TJ, who were able to put 97 NSL on the pitch, against 90.50 NSL for SH. In AS Kirk, we already see the 7th freak player in div 2 this week, which might be even more than the number of freaks in div 1. TJ off to a good start as well, while SH have an unfortunate start

SH is a former div1 team and it’s always interesting to see how they do in div2. Well, the start isn’t too good. SH is stocked with youth but it seems they haven’t got the right age yet to really make an impression. 90 nsl is just a bit on the low side but don’t count SH out for the playoffs. Not with a midseason aging coming :) TJ won the match. Mostly because they could field allmost 7 nsl more then SH and this resulted in alot more emp. TJ looks to have a great balanced CP team and who knows where they can end this season. Top 3?

Grammar United started the new season in div 2 the way they played the previous season in div 1: with another 0-0 result. In their first home game this season, Englehart Storm, last years playoffs finalist, faced a tough opponent in GU, another team that relegated, and possibly the team it is the most difficult to score against. Which they proved, once again, in this very match. However, GU is not only know for the very few goals scored against them, they are also known for not scoring many goals themselves, because of their defensive tactics. That was another thing that we could witness here, after Gaza jr. missed the only chance of the match (given because of the smother shot GU was awarded) and so the match ended as it started: 0-0.

What happened with GU’s great defense?? After GU’s relegation i really thought it would be a matter of 24 matches before we saw Michael again in div1 but this match leaves me worried… Ahh, a sentoff, it seems Michael was really really unlucky in this match to have one of his top DS’s sent off after only 2 minutes of play. Still, does GU have championship form and championship players? I’ll reserve judgement for next week :) ES had a good playoff but lost from IQ. How will they do this season? Well, what goes for GU goes double for ES. Two!! vTwo sentoff in the first match of the season. Talk about bad bad luck.. I’m going to reserve judgement over ES as well but my first thoughts spell playoffs. For both teams actually :)
