SAEFL Season 13 WEEK 1

DIVISION 1 GAMES

The Boelewieten vs. FC Inferno is a clash between 2 teams who have been in the top half almost the entire previous season, so you can consider this to be a top match. Both Jeroen and Marco did not (have to) go all the way last season because of title or cup obligations, so we don’t expect both teams to be in serious rebuilding troubles. Nonetheless, it’s always interesting to see how both teams survived another round of aging. Given the fact that both managers were able to field 100+ NSL teams, the answer to that seems to be: okay. FI even seemed ambitious enough to play their first GC already in the first match, in an away game. What does this say about Marco’s plans to take on TB, who might be considered at least an outsider for the title? Well, for now it doesn’t say anything yet, as the red card for AM Cacete spoilt everything that Marco had in mind. Sure, TB also saw a player leave the field after a nasty charge, but by then TB was already ahead, and didn’t give that away anymore in the remains of the match. So, in spite of the Grudge, FI leave South park empty handed, and TB wins three cool points!

SAEFL Season 13 WEEK 1

The first promoted team we see in action this week is Point of Napier. In their (to my best knowledge) very first match ever in division 1, they meet a tough team in InterQuartile Rangers, but at least Kelly has the home advantage in the first “Rooker-clash” since a couple of seasons. – I bet both Kelly and Terry have been looking forward to this for a long time. PN has been known for their attacking WP for ages, and this season will be no different. IQ on the other side, did not anticipate on that, but chose to play their own strength, which is also attacking, ONE. At first sight, IQ had the best of it. They were the better team, they fielded more NSL, and they would have generated more EMP and beat PN. However, the IQ players obviously could not handle their nerves (or did Kelly bribe the referee), and no less than 2 players had to leave the field after being shown a red card. After that, it was of course PN who were the team in control, and in the end it was PN who ended the match with the most EMP and thus the most chances: 36 against 32. But, since IQ had a slightly better goalie, the result in the end was 16 – 16, and with that the first Rookerclash is undecided. If you ask me, I think it’s a fair result, and although both Kelly and Terry can point out where they could have won this game, I think they can live with it as well.

SAEFL Season 13 WEEK 1

Catbel Athletic against Tottenford Heats is the first clash of the Dutchies this year. CA have been rebuilding last year, and still ended at 5th position, so who knows where this season might lead. TH neglected the league a little last season, but that was because of their cup interested (in which they were very successful by the way). In potential, we have 2 teams with experienced managers here, who –with a couple of strategic trades- could be in the race for the title this season. Sounds promising, right? Well, if only this game was as promising as it sounded. The truth is that it was a dull, dull match. Both teams played a strong ZD, and in spite of the nice EMP for both Ivo and Mark, you know the drill with ZD: if the difference is not very big, the match ends 0-0, and that is exactly what happened. Sure, TH were a little unlucky to miss the penalty, but this game did not deserve a winner and the 0-0 suits fine. Too bad for all those 31099 supporters who came to Union Ground. It took 45 minutes to wake everyone up after the game.

The second team promoted from div 2 is Lisbon United. However, unlike PN, LU knows what it’s like to play in the top flight. Nuno and LU have only been gone for one season, and I bet most of us will have expected them to be back soon. In their first match, they face a pretty tough opponent in Alcohol Anonymous, last years nr. 3. And much like the previous game, we saw 2 strong teams playing defense, only now it was ZD against TS. The only difference with the previous match is that AA in fact was more than 5 EMP better than LU, so instead of a penalty, they were awarded a smother shot. But they missed that too, and with that we have the second defense match in a row that ends 0-0. Both Nuno and Nathan will have to admit that that is a fair result, although it will be easier for Nuno to do that ?

SAEFL Season 13 WEEK 1

Adirondak Renegades is the third and last newly promoted team in div 1, and they also start with a home match. However, their home match is, in theory, the most difficult of all, as they have to face last seasons Champion: Jazz Greats. Sounds like a bridge too far, and too big a difference. Don took on Bart as he had no respect for the reigning champion. (And in fact………well….never mind……) Of course, when you do the math, you will know that it was the home advantage that made the difference, but the fact was that there was a difference and that that was in AR’s favour. Both Don and Bart played attacking, we saw ONE against WP, and with 142 against 137, AR was more than 5 EMP better. However, JG had the better goalie and with (once again) 36 shots against 32, that proved to be the biggest difference, and was in JG’s favour. A good start for last years winner, and in spite of the fact that AR is still without points, a performance like this promises a lot of good for the rest of the season.

NoShaKi WC’98 against Druss Legends.means the team that narrowly escaped relegation on the very last day of last season (NW) against the runner up (of course, DL). You’d expect this to be an easy win for DL, but it wasn’t. NW was the better team. Vince played more NSL (8.25 more!), generated more EMP (almost 6 more!), and with that, of course, created more chances. (47 against 43, since both Vince and Martijn played WP). Now, a 4 chance difference doesn’t say a lot of course, when it’s 47 against 43, but given the fact that NW also had the better GK, you’d say that NW would win this game. But, unlike NSL, EMP, chances, or GK- NSL, there’s 1 thing that Martijn had more of, and that was luck. A lot of luck in fact, as it did not just show in the fact that DL still won the match after all, but also in the fact that they won big: 24-14! I bet Vince will feel disappointed with this result, and he has every right to be. Martijn on the other hand does what he does best: have a good start of the season.
