Trav Spoodle against Blue Storm means the nr. 2 against the nr. 10. If you’d expected a difference in strength here, you were right: in spite of the fact that BS played a grudgecard, and that TS faced a red card already in the first half, TS still won this match. A closer look however, learns that actually, TS were very lucky (and that is not because the boost they played). Sure, it may have been because of the red card, plus that grudge (which in that case would have been very well spent), but BS in fact was better than TS. Both in NSL, in EMP, and in chances (6 against 4). If you add that to the fact that BS played with a NSL 10 goalie, against a NSL9 one for TS, it makes you wonder how on earth BS did ever lose this game. So: TS very very lucky, and too bad for BS, as they deserved more here.

Melchester Rovers are the number last in the table, and this week they welcome Dead Scientist, the surprising semi-finalist in the cup, and also still very much in the race for a playoff spot as they are on 5th position. However, betting on 2 horses might cause teams to lose attention now an then, so could MR maybe surprise DS this week? The answer to that would be no. DS were a lot better, and although MR were unlucky to see CB Josemi being sent off already in the first half, it wasn’t just that that made the difference. DS nicely countered MR’s Wingplay with a strategic OFF, and that lead to a 7-0 victory in the end. With that, DS stay very much in the race for the playoffs, with another 3 points and only 4 matches left. MR have to wait at least another week to try to escape from last position.

After we have just seen DS win their match, with Aros VSK we see another team in the race for the playoffs, on 6th postion. This weeks opponent is Vitesse Arnhem, a bottom half team (nr. 11), and that looks like a good chance to keep up with DS. And indeed it was. Although VA played a boost, AV still had a much better performance, and the 5-0 in the end was a fair reflection of the match. Only one minor (or larger?) setback for AV: the injury for their top player Orwell. But at least they know they will stay in the top half.

England U-21 are the proud leaders of the table, and today they play against Englehart Storm, the number 8. Once again, you might expect an easy win for the home team, but in this match things turned out different. EU were not strong enough to perform better than ES, not even with the home advantage. The 9-5 win for ES was no more than a logic result of both teams performances on the pitch, and with that, EU lose their top position to TS, who did manage to win their match this week. The 3 points for ES mean that they still have a chance at reaching the playoffs. However, since we also saw DS and AV win their match, they need to make up for at least 5 points in the 4 remaining matches, not to mention that AS is also still ahead of them, so it won’t be easy.

The top match in div 3 this week was without a doubt the Falcons against the Speedsters, as it was the clash between the nrs. 3 and 4. Both teams were 1 point behind TS and 2 behind EU, who just lost their match, so a victory for either team could make them climb to 2nd position. Sounds like an important match to me, but neither manager chose to play a boost or a grudge. Very well, at least that kinda levelled things. It was FA who put on the best NSL team. However, it was SS who had the best EMP-ratio, and not just because of the red card for AS Christie from FA. (That only cost them 1.97 EMP). That also meant more chances for SS: 21 against 15. On the other hand, it was FA who had the better goalie: 10 against 9.5. And in the end, when all the little things were added up, the result was in balance: 11-11. I think that was a fair result. Sure, SS were a little unlucky in their goalies performance (as 10 vs. 9.5 is not that big a difference as the saving rate suggested), but on the other hand FA were unlucky with the red card. Too bad for both teams though, that with respect to the race for the title it will feel like losing 2 points. But then again, if the game ends in a draw under these circumstances, any team that WOULD have played a grudge or boost, would most likely have won this one.

Adelaide Kickers vs. African Selection means the number 9 (AK) against the nr. 7. African Selection is of course very much in the race for the playoffs, they were only 1 victory (3 points) away from AV and their 6th position. However, we saw AV, and also DS (5th) and ES (8th) win their match this week, while AS fail to stay in the race as they do not manage to beat AK here. AK really had the best of it, and looking at the stats it was not just because of the boost they played (although of course it was helpful!). It was AK whose lineup fitted better to their tactics. That made that the EMP they generated was more than AS did, and enough to beat them: 9-5. AS lose 3 important points in the race for the last playoff spot, and even drop a place as ES caught up with them. For AK, I am afraid that in spite of this nice result, the 3 points are nice as well, but with only 4 matches left, will they still make a chance to mingle in the fight for that last playoff spot? No offense, but actually I doubt that.
